Career
1832 enrollment in the medical faculty at the University of Tübingen; February 1837 arrested and expelled from the university for participation in a secret student society; 1838 doctorate of medicine and state medical examinations passed with distinction; February 1840 to February 1841 physician on a Dutch merchant ship on a voyage to the East Indies; settlement in Heilbronn where he took up a medical practice and held various civic posts.
