Heer; 1839 studies of botany under Alphonse de Candolle at Geneva; 1840 doctorate from the University of Zurich; 1841 at the University of Berlin; 1842 work with Schleiden at the University of Jena; publication of the Zeitschrift für wissenschaftliche Botanik with Schleiden; 1845-1852 work in Zurich as Privatdozent, later as assistant professor; 1852 professor of botany at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau; 1855 professor of general botany at the Polytechnikum and at the University of Zurich; 1857-1889 professor of botany at the University of Munich and director of the botanical garden.
