- Career
- 1865 graduated in agricultural studies from Wesleyan University, Middletown; then studied chemistry at New Haven and received the degree of Ph.D. from Yale University in 1869; 1870-1871 trip to Germany, where he visited the Universities of Leipzig and Berlin; 1871-1872 chair of chemistry, East Tennessee University; 1873 similar appointment at Maine State College and returned to Wesleyan University as professor of chemistry; 1875-1877 director of Connecticut Agricultural Experimental Station; 1888-1891 director, Office of Experiment Stations, Washington; since 1898 director of the Storrs Experiment Station.
