- 1855 studies of mathematics, physics and philosophy at the University of Vienna; 1860 doctorate with a dissertation on electrical discharge and induction; Privatdozent in the laboratory of Andreas von Ettingshausen; popular scientific lectures on optics, musical acoustics and psychophysics, as well as formal university lectures in Vienna; 1864 professor of mathematics at the University of Graz; by 1866 title of professor of physics; 1867-95 professor of experimental physics at Charles University in Prague; 1882-84 rector at Prague; 1895 professor of the history and theory of the inductive sciences at the University of Vienna; 1901 retirement from professorship and appointment to the upper chamber of the Austrian parliament.
