- Studies of medicine in Würzburg and Munich; assistant at the psychiatric department of F. v. Rinecker in Würzburg; 1878 graduation; 1878-82 work with B. v. Gudden in Munich; 1882 move to Leipzig and Habilitation in psychiatry; work in the laboratory of Wilhelm Wundt; 1886 professor of psychiatry in Dorpat; 1891 Ordinarius of psychiatry in Heidelberg and 1904 in Munich; 1922 professor emeritus; 1917 foundation of the "Deutsche Forschungsanstalt für Psychiatrie" which was later taken over by the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gesellschaft (today Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry).
