Career
Apprenticeship with Amerongen, the assistant ('amanuensis') of Utrecht professor Pieter Harting; from 1860 onward mechanic and assistant at the physiological laboratory of the University of Utrecht; work as laboratory attendant of Donders for over thirty years and of other Utrecht professor such as Snellen, Engelmann, Pekelharing and Zwaardemaker; opening of his own business; about 1881 introduction of the astigmometer, a modification of the ophthalmometer by E. Javal and H. Schiötz, onto the German market; certificate of honor from the Congrès International des Sciences Médicales at Amsterdam in 1879 and at Rome in 1894.
