1861 studies of natural sciences at Heidelberg; 1862 studies of history at Berlin under Ranke, Droysen and Jaffés; 1866 graduation; teacher at the Friedrichsgymnasium in Berlin; 1870 work in the editorial department of "Grenzboten" and 1871-1874 in G. Freytag's newly founded weekly magazine "Im neuen Reich"; 1873 Habilitation in history from the University of Leipzig; 1874 associate professor; 1879 professor at Breslau; 1884 at Bonn; 1891 journalistic work in Munich as director of the supplement of "Allgemeine Zeitung" and occasionally of the newspaper itself; acquaintance with Paul Heyse and the artist circle "Heroen" (with W. Hertz, F. Lenbach, H. Levi, L. Fulda); 1897-1905 professor of history at Freiburg im Breisgau; 1901-1906 and 1907-1912 president of the Bad. Historische Kommission; collaborator in Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie.
