- 1872 apprenticed to a pharmacist; work in pharmacies in Denmark and in Germany; 1879 return to Denmark and pharmacist's examination; studies in botany and chemistry; 1881 assistant in the department of chemistry of the newly established Carlsberg laboratory; 1887 resignation of his post at the Carlsberg laboratory but continued research with the aid of stipends; travels to Zurich, Darmstadt and Tübingen for further work in plant physiology; 1892 lecturer; 1903 professor of botany and plant physiology at the Copenhagen Agricultural College; 1905 professor of plant physiology at the University of Copenhagen; 1917 rector at Copenhagen; several honorary degrees.
