- 1821 studies of medicine at the University of Leipzig; 1826 doctorate from the University of Leipzig with a dissertation entitled Observatio biologica de magnetismo animali; study trips to Paris and London; 1828 Privatdozent at Leipzig; 1834 associate professor of zootomy at Leipzig; 1837-1842 professor of physiology, pathology and semiotics at the University of Dorpat; 1843 professor of physiology at the University of Halle; 1854 professor of anatomy and physiology at Halle; 1872 division of the two subjects, chair of physiology transferred to J. Bernstein, Volkmann professor of anatomy; 1876 retirement from his post at university.
