Apprenticeship as an apothecary in Lübeck, Gothenburg and Tübingen; studies of pharmaceutics at the University of Tübingen; at the same time assistant at the chair of applied chemistry (until 1872 under Hoppe-Seyler); 1877 director of the physiological chemical department of Du Bois-Reymond's physiological institute; 1878 Privatdozent; 1882 associate professor of chemistry at the University of Berlin; 1883 professor of medical chemistry at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau.
