- 1909 studies of medicine, philosophy and psychology in Freiburg, Munich and as a student of Carl Stumpf in Berlin; 1914-19 served in the First World War; 1916 received a doctorate in Berlin with a dissertation entitled Die psychische Tätigkeit bei Hemmung von Willensvorgängen und das Grundgesetz der Asssoziation; 1920 habilitation (Der Begriff der Genese in Physik, Biologie und Entwicklungsgeschichte); 1921 assistant and lecturer at the Berlin Psychological Institute, working with the Gestalt psychologists Max Wertheimer, Wolfgang Köhler and Kurt Koffka; 1927 associate professor at the University of Berlin; emigration to the USA in 1933; 1933-35 Cornell University, New York; 1935-44 professor of Child Psychology at the Child Welfare Research Station, University of Iowa; visiting professor at the Harvard University (1937-38) and at the University of California, Berkeley (1939); 1944-47 director of the Research Center for Group Dynamics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
