- 1842-45 studies of medicine at Heidelberg under Tiedemann, Naegele and Henle; 1845 medical degree with the thesis De Malpighianis pulmonum vesiculis; general practitioner in Utrecht; 1845-47 pupil of G. J. Mulder; acquaintance with F. C. Donders and I. van Deen in Mulder's laboratory; 1847 Privatdozent in physiology and anthropology at Heidelberg; 1854 resignation; 1856 professor of physiology at Zurich; 1855 editor of the journal Untersuchungen zur Naturlehre des Menschen und der Thiere; 1861 professor of experimental physiology and physiological chemistry; 1879 professor at the "Sapienza" in Rome, later senator.
