- Career
- Studies of medicine; 1834 medical degree from the University of Dorpat and appointment as extraordinary professor and prosector in anatomy at Dorpat; before assuming the post, one year of anatomical studies in Berlin under J. Müller, C. Ehrenberg, J. Henle and F. Schlemm which included a tour to the research facilities at Dresden, Halle and Leipzig; 1842 full professor of anatomy; 1843 chair of physiology and pathology; 1843-1845 dean of the medical faculty; 1857 study of the embryonic and adult spinal cord together with Carl Kupffer; 1858 rector of the university; founder of a public baby nursery and president of a charitable institution called "Dorpat's Hülfsverein".
