- apprenticeship as pharmacist at Memel (East-Prussia); 1821 move to Berlin, attendence at the Joachimsthal'sches Gymnasium; 1823-1826 studies in medicine at the University of Berlin; following work as a military surgeon at the Charité in Berlin, Cologne, Bonn, Potsdam and again Berlin; 1830 Phytotomie; 1830-1832 as surgeon journey around the world; natural studies and collections especially in South America; 1834 associate professor of botany at the University of Berlin; co-editor of the Jahresberichte über die Arbeiten für physiologische Botanik (1837-1839) together with Heinrich Friedrich Link.
