- 1847 began study of mathematics and physics at Marburg but soon switched to medicine; 1849 studies in Berlin; on 27 August 1851 doctorate at Marburg with a thesis on visual errors due to astigmatism; prosector in anatomy with his brother; six months later he followed Carl Ludwig to Zurich; 1852-1855 prosector in anatomy with Ludwig in Zurich; 1855-1861 associate professor of anatomical and physiological auxiliary sciences, 1862 full professor of physiology at Zurich; 1868 full professor of physiology at the Physiological Institute, University of Würzburg; 1899 retirement.
